When Passion Meets Your Profession

Words by: Hanna Azulay Hasfari, FL 003

Meet George Raden Mas Said, also known as Bejo. Young, expressive, goofy, but passionate in helping others. Recently, he had done The Medical Oath and Declarations which declares his commitment to assume the responsibilities and the obligations of the medical profession. Bejo would love to share his experience and perspective regarding his profession as the first medical doctor from XL Future Leaders.

The Struggle

Underwent the series of examinations and internships, Bejo has succeeded in adding the title of dr. (dokter) before his name. The struggles were very challenging and tremendous. One of that was he had to take Ujian Kompetensi Dokter Indonesia (UKDI), which is a test to get license to practice medicine as general practitioner) then take a year-long internship course in primary health care clinics or primary hospitals all over the country to practice as general practitioner under supervision of senior doctors1.

Bejo has done several years of internships in Jakarta, Semarang for forensic stage, Yogyakarta for eye stage, and Magelang for psych stage. During his internships, he had so many unique experiences. However, there was one important value that he took during the internship phase, which is essentially we are all a long life learner.

Before he did the internship, Bejo thought that as the medical graduates, he could learn merely from the specialists or the seniors which gave the highly prestigious feeling. It turned out; he wasn’t merely learned from the specialists and the seniors. But also the nurse, office boys (OB), the food delivery service, and the ones that gave the most, the patient. “A doctor is not only healing the patient. Doctor exists to respect, to serve, and to learn from other professions, especially the patient.” – Bejo.

The Inspiration

A man could stand and become his own with the figure that he could look up into. Bejo also has the figure that inspires him to become what he is now, which is his mother. In brief, Bejo thought of his mother based on her name. Sri, which stands for S (sexy), R (ramah or friendly), I (istirahat, or break). He thinks that his mother is sexy because she has the full package of 3B (brain, beauty, and behaviour). According to Bejo, his mother is able to deal with problems intelligently. She is also beautiful and youthful. Another thing is, she has such a positive perspective and activities.

Bejo also considers that his mother is a friendly figure. Not only to everybody, but also to the new things. The last one is break. She always told Bejo if he is chasing something, he should have known when he needs to take a break. Based on Bejo’s opinion, his mother always know when to begin and to stop.

The Dedication

Talking about his passion in helping others, he was one of the initiator of XLFL Care movement in Sekolah Master. Recently, he has initiated a movement of XLFL Safe Community and led a workshop on Basic Life Support awareness on behalf of XL Future Leaders Alumni. He has the spirit of helping others wouldn’t be a burden of you’re doing it wholeheartedly.

There was a personal experience that triggered his initiative in starting XLFL Safe Community. “When I was having his internship phase, a man came into the emergency room because he was unconscious. Therefore, his condition was DOA (Dead On Arrival). We (re: Bejo and his intern partners) tracked the medical record of this man. It turned out that he has obesity with uncontrollable eating habit and he had hypertension which wasn’t checked regularly. We assumed that this man’s death was because of heart attack at home, which there several family members were staying at home. We are used to do the Basic Life Support which is CPR when we found a patient like this. The family of this man thought that if only he could be hospitalized earlier, he would be helped. But there was one thing on my mind, if only the family understands how to do Basic Life Support, it will be much better for the patient.” – Bejo.

Because of that incident, he found that Basic Life Support procedure is possibly could be done by the medical practitioner and common people. He realized that Basic Life Support is a lifetime knowledge that everyone needs to know. That what made him initiate XLFL Safe Community Basic Life Support Workshop and started the series with CPR workshop which created a huge impact not only for XL Future Leaders family but also the public.

The Concern

“To improve the quality of living things.” – Bejo. When we talked about his greatest concern as a medical doctor in celebrating The International Health Day on April 7th, his statement is his ultimate reason on chasing his dream to become a doctor. His perspective based on the root word of ‘doctor’ itself that came from latin word of ‘docere’ which is to teach. Therefore, being a doctor is not healing but teaching others. He stated that healing is merely God’s business and doctor only has a few capabilities in medical than other people. Hence, only God who has the ability to cure the ill. Back to his first statement, the living things which are including animals and plants needs to be taken seriously. He wanted to improve the quality of the environment around us as human to be utilized well. The point is, to improve the quality of human first, through increasing the awareness around healthy issue which can give a great impact to life in order to live effectively and excellently.

The Message

Before I ended my interview session with Bejo, the last question that I asked is his message for all of XL Future Leaders fellow. He emphasizes the main thing about XL Future Leaders Alumni which is an area to learn and to struggle. “Never ask for what XL Future Leaders has done to you, but always ask what kind of contribution that you can give to XL Future Leaders.”Bejo
